Join Beaches Museum and the Rhoda L. Martin Cultural Heritage Center on Saturday, August 7 at 11:00 a.m. for a book reading for children with Heidi Tyline King, author of “Saving American Beach.”  The book is a stunning picture book biography that tells the story of MaVynee Betsch, an African American opera singer turned environmentalist and the legacy she preserved.

Written in lyrical, heartfelt prose, King’s text depicts the rich life of Ms. Betsch, from her days as a renowned opera singer to becoming a champion for environmentalism. This inspirational true story sheds light on a hidden figure in history who is not often discussed in the classroom, but whose impact has been long lasting. Accompanied by arresting illustrations by award-winning artist Ekua Holmes, this story is sure to inspire readers to stand up for what they believe in. A book signing will follow the reading.
