Boardwalk Talk: 'Our Beaches – Retired Mountains' with Bill Longenecker

November 12, 2026 - 6:30 pm -7:30 pm

November 12, 2026 – 6:30 p.m.

Join us at the museum for a very special Boardwalk Talk — the chance to take a science lesson with Beach Legend, Bill Longenecker!

‘Our Beaches, Retired Mountains Updated!’ ” will explore the unexpected geology of what most people see as “just sand” with a look at fulgerites, calcite, flint, limestone, and more”. Hands on samples and an experiment are included.

Bill Longenecker is a longtime surfer and respected figure in the Jacksonville Beach and Neptune Beach communities. Beginning in 1984, Bill became one of Florida’s longest-running daily surf reporters, providing phone-in surf reports for local surf shops, including Hixon’s and later Sunrise Surf Shops. For more than 40 years, surfers throughout Northeast Florida relied on his surf and weather updates. Bill was also a science teacher in the gifted student program and a columnist for local newspapers for 40 years. As a trained paramedic, he worked in area hospitals for 42 years, assisting ER doctors and nurses. He still volunteers at Baptist Medical Center—Beaches and presents science programs at local schools.

The Boardwalk Talk is free to Museum members with a $5 donation suggested for non-members. Because seating space is limited, registration is required. Use the code MEMBER at checkout for free access.
