Boardwalk Talk: Dr. Rebecca Karimi, Voces de Hispanos Oral History Project

October 12, 2023 - 6:30 pm -7:30 pm

The Voces de Hispanos Oral History Project was originally created in 2021 by Dr. Rebecca Dominguez-Karimi in partnership with Jacksonville Historical Society. Dr. Karimi decided to create an oral history research study to document the history of Hispanics in the NE FL area as a dearth of information existed about their history since the 1920s. She received the historical society’s blessing, they agreed to archive the collection and the Voces de Hispanos Oral History Project was born. In 2022 she created partnerships with Amelia Island Museum of History, Clay County Archives, and St. Augustine Historical Society to deposit oral histories gathered in the respective counties. Other partnerships with local museums and historical societies will soon be announced. The collection now contains almost 70 interviews.

This presentation will focus on historical facts obtained from narrators that participated in the Voces de Hispanos Oral History project and that were verified by supporting documents. Furthermore, many of the narrators themselves played a first-hand role in contributing to or witnessing the history of Hispanics in Northeast Florida over the past 6 decades, some arriving in the River City in the early 1960s.

Voces Hispanas is sponsored by First Coast Hispanic Chamber of Commerce & MiAddvantage Marketing.

The talk will take place in the Beaches Museum and will be accompanied by the traveling exhibit.  Members are free and a $5 donation is requested from all others.  Please register in advance and if you have any questions about the event, please call 904-241-5657.
