“Recovering and Reclaiming Manhattan Beach” Reception

February 22, 2024 - 5:00 pm -7:00 pm

Adele Grage Cultural Center

Brittany Cohill, Instructor of History at Jacksonville University and Director of the Mandarin Museum and Historical Society, will speak about Manhattan Beach at 5:45 p.m. at the Adele Grage Cultural Center in Atlantic Beach.
Learn the story of historic Manhattan Beach, Florida. With no visible site evidence of a once-vibrant coastal retreat, “Recovering Manhattan Beach” uses archival sources, oral histories, and a handful of the only known photographs to piece together its timeline (1900-1940s). The presentation places the site within the context of Jim Crow segregation while paying special attention to the founding of Manhattan Beach (located at present-day Hanna Park in Jacksonville), the role it played in Jacksonville’s African American community, and the factors that led to its demise. Cohill’s brief talk will also cover the journey to “reclaiming” Manhattan Beach through the installation and unveiling of a Florida state historical marker.
Light refreshments will be served by the Beaches Train Club.
