JACKSONVILLE BEACH, FL-The upcoming Beaches Museum exhibit will have something for everyone interested in Beaches history.

“Palmettos, Piers & Pioneers”, tells the story of Palm Valley, and on February 19, you can join some of that areas most well-known residents for opening night festivities in the Museum lobby. Admission to the opening night party is free, but donations are appreciated.

From 6:00 to 7:30 P.M. you will enjoy the tastes and sounds of old Palm Valley as you mingle with local authors and historians. The exhibit itself runs from February 19 through April 5, and admission is free.

This quiet community is alive with history and stories from the early Spanish settlers to the pioneers who called it home and the families who protect its legacy today, this quiet community is alive with history and [memorable] stories. Join us as we travel through the areas of Palm Valley-Twenty Mile Station, Palm Valley Bridge, the Neck, Mickler’s Pier, Diego Plains and Palm Valley Landing,-and learn about the families and industries that have shaped this community.

Beaches Museum Announces Major New Benefactor

The Beaches Museum & History Park’s newest exhibit, “Palmettos, Piers and Pioneers”, opened to a record crowd of more than 200 guests on Thursday, February 19. The exhibit shares the history and stories of the area as told by some of its most well-known residents and historians. Items on display include the original control panel of the Palm Valley draw bridge and the badge worn by Deputy Sheriff William “Willie” Mickler along with dozens of family photos, heirlooms and even taxidermy animals from the area.

In addition to celebrating the opening, the announcement of a new major benefactor to the Museum was made. The Lead Gift for the moving of the Oesterreicher-McCormick Homestead, an 1873 cracker cabin currently located in Palm Valley, was made by Thomas LeNoble. It recognizes and honors the memory of his parents, Mary and Victor LeNoble. Thomas LeNoble grew up in Jacksonville Beach and attended both San Pablo Elementary School and Fletcher High School.

Mr. LeNoble simultaneously made a second generous gift to establish the LeNoble Endowment for the Preservation and Renovation of the Historic Buildings in the History Park. This was also announced at the Opening.

“The parents inspired, the son responded and we will all benefit from the results!” said Suzanne McCormick Taylor, co-chair of the capital campaign for the cabin move and daughter of the Historical Society’s founder, Jean Haden McCormick. “It’s been so gratifying to see the generosity of our community for saving and preserving our historic buildings. We look forward to continuing to grow the Endowment in order to take the best care possible of these treasures in the future”.

The Palm Valley exhibit will be open until April 22 and admission is free. The move of the Oesterreicher-McCormick Cabin is expected to take place in March

Naval Station Mayport: Guardian of the Southern Frontier

75 years after the US Naval Frontier Section Base at Mayport was established on land occupied by Wonderwood by-the Sea, East Mayport and Burnside Beach, this exhibit explores the history of the base and its impact on the Beaches community. From Elizabeth Stark to the USS Stark, from the home front to homeland security and to the ships that will carry the base in to the future-Naval Station Mayport has played a major part on the local and global stage.

The Beaches Museum & History Park is proud to announce that it is featuring the work of Heather & Holly Blanton.

Twin sisters who have lived in Northeast Florida throughout their lives, Heather & Holly became artists at a very early age. Heather focused on photography, including hand-manipulated Polaroids, along with a career in fashion, portrait and celebrity photography, and now focuses on fine art photography. Holly’s mixed-media artwork explores a scene simply, but with a texturally and intellectually complex approach.

While both artists can certainly stand alone, this show will display how their works overlap and intertwine as they each uniquely explore and interpret the world around them.

Opening night: Thursday, July 23 at 6 P.M.

Join Heather & Holly Blanton, Museum members, supporters and art patrons as the exhibit is opened. This will be the first opportunity to experience the exhibit as it opens to the public and a portion of any artwork sold will benefit the Beaches Museum & History Park.

Celebrate 25 Years of Enrique Mora Art on the First Coast

In a continued celebration of talented beaches artists, the Beaches Museum & History Park will be featuring the work of Enrique Mora in its upcoming exhibit, MORA: 25 Years on the First Coast.

Beginning with an opening night party on Thursday, April 30 at 6 P.M., the exhibit will run through June 30.

About Enrique Mora

Mora, who was born in Puerto Rico, uses his heritage to infuse color, passion and the aesthetics of the island in to his work. A self-taught artist, Mora works in oils and mixed media and focuses primarily on the female form in his work.

After touring the United States and Puerto Rico and developing an international following, Mora settled in Northeast Florida in the 1980s, developing a niche in Jacksonville. “We are very excited to celebrate the 25 years of his life and his art in our community” says Chris Hoffman, Museum Executive Director. “We hope to share his work with a wide and diverse audience through display at the Museum.”

A donation of $5 is suggested to support the Museum. The reception will be located in the museum lobby.

Tales from Palm Valley: Saturday, February 28, 1 P.M.-2:30 P.M.

Storytellers from Palm Valley including Sid Mickler, Worley Faver, Michel Oesterreicher and Hugo Mickler will sit back on rocking chairs and tell the tales (and some tall tales) that make Palm Valley one of the most unique and interesting areas of Northeast Florida.

The Art of Leigh Murphy

As part of the Beaches Museum and History Park’s continuing commitment to showcase work by talented local artists, they are pleased to announce an exhibit of Leigh Murphy’s work beginning Wednesday November 19.

Although Leigh’s talent extends to a variety of mediums, her first love is watercolor and its capacity to provide incredibly fine detail with brilliant colors and varied texture. Her art has appeared in numerous exhibitions and collections, among them the Oil Painters of America National Exhibition, various US Embassies and the Disney Corporation. She has also received honors that range from recognition by Who’s Who in American Women to Artist in Residence for Duval County Schools.

Remembering Hurricane Dora: The 50th Anniversary

Fifty years ago Hurricane Dora blew into the Jacksonville Beaches area. The Beaches Museum is observing the anniversary of this awe-inspiring storm with a new exhibit opening September 10 to November 9. The 1964 hurricane season produced a great deal of destructive activity in Florida, but no other storm affected the northeast area of the state quite as much as Dora. In fact, Dora was the only hurricane-level storm to directly hit the Beaches area in the 20th Century. The 50th Anniversary exhibit looks back at the wave of destruction that Dora brought to the First Coast and the determined efforts of residents to restore their homes and livelihoods.

Wednesday, September 10th, 5:30 P.M.-7:30 P.M. Admission is $5 and free for museum members. The reception will be located in the museum lobby.

Since hurricane tracking started, Hurricane Dora was the first direct hit to the First Coast. The Category 3, turned into a Category 4 Equivalent storm, dropped to a Category 2 storm as it reached landfall, causing tremendous damage to businesses and homes along the First Coast, and reaching far inland as well.

Inthis exhibit, you will see why the Boardwalk, Roller Coaster, Ferris Wheel, and many coastal businesses ended for good.

Dreams into Art: The Paintings of Susanne Schuenke

The exhibition is showcasing 20 oil paintings by the artist. Born in Germany, Susanne Schuenke lives in Ponte Vedra Beach. Her art exudes a strong European flavor hovering between magic and reality. Her artistry and technical command of the medium is beyond dispute. Ms. Schuenke has exhibited widely both in the U.S. and in European countries.

A large commissioned painting by Susanne Schuenke is on permanent display in the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville.

Susanne’s art arrived at the Museum on Thursday May 15th in the afternoon. Following are the activities related to the exhibit.

The artist presented a lecture about the relationship between art and psychoanalysis on June 19th in the Beaches Museum Chapel. The psychiatrist Naum Itkin, M.D., Ph.D., co-presented that lecture. – free to members – others $5.00

Waiting for the Train: Henry Flagler and the Florida East Coast Railway

Henry Morrison Flagler (January 2, 1830 – May 20, 1913) was an American industrialist and a founder of Standard Oil. He was also a key figure in the development of the eastern coast of Florida along the Atlantic Ocean and was founder of what became the Florida East Coast Railway. Originally from New York state, he met John D. Rockefeller in Ohio. An early partnership lead to what became Standard Oil Company. With his success in refineries, he ventured out to railroading in Florida, with a grand start at St. Augustine and Jacksonville Beach.
